THIS WEEK’S
THOUGHTS AND THINKINGS
Ugh. The weather has been SOOO back and forth lately! Spring one minute then winter again 8 hours later. No wonder we’ve all been sick and can’t seem to shake it.

I found out some interesting things about snot (just what you want to hear about, right? 😛). Every day we produce about 1.5 liters of mucus. Most of the time our body absorbs it and puts it to use lubricating our joints and stuff. But during a cold, it all comes out your nose. That’s why it seems like there’s a never ending faucet of snot going. How’s that for a fun, but gross, fact? Lol.

At any rate, the weather seems like it’s level-ing out a little in the last few days, so we're hopeful that Spring is nearly here and will see us all well again.
Well, I guess that’s neither here nor there. One thing I wanted to mention was the new article up on the blog.

Does God Want Us to Eat Healthy?

It’s a question I put before the Lord a few months ago. I believe he brought out the answer to a place of balance and freedom. Take a look and leave me some comments if you have time.

Beyond the blog, there's several things in this newsletter to look at. Vitamin C and weight loss, quiche, lasagna, plain Jane essential oils, and some helps for insomnia and sleep troubles.

I hope you find something that suits your fancy this time.

Weight Loss Journey: TRIM HEALTHY MAMA

The scale once again hasn’t moved much. Still not too worried about it, especially since I think I’m losing inches if not pounds. At least my clothes are getting bigger and bigger. I’m almost down to having to get medium sized pants; something I’ve not seen since high school or thereabouts.

But in all fairness, I’ve been sick lately, and I think that’s part of the stall as my body is focused on other things than losing weight. I’ve been taking a lot of Vita C to get past this cold.

We’ve made our own liposomal vitamin c for several years now. It's pretty easy, although you do have to have special equipment. Vita C powder, lecithin powder, and a sonic generator (we use a sonic jewelry cleaner with a reservoir to "zap" the liquid).

I usually take some every day, but occasionally, I get tired of messing with it and laze off for a week or so. I eventually start to feel bad or I get sick, and so I start in again. You’d think I’d learn to just stick with it, but I go through this process every now and again.

But one thing I’ve noticed (with the exception of this last time since I’ve been sick) is when I back off the Vita C is often when the scale stops moving. The (thm) sisters often say that weight loss is harder when you aren’t getting enough vitamin C. I believe it! Here’s a couple links to support that idea.

As you might suspect, foods with high Vita C content are encouraged on the
low carb vita c sources
Trim Healthy Mama plan. Spinach is one. The quiche we had recently with spinach was wonderful, as was Lazy Lasagna. Both were easy peasy to make. Click the pics to visit. Dig in!

Foundational Essential Oils

Essential Oil Starter Pack www.jordanscrossing.net
I'm a great believer in single, every day oils.

In the essential oil world, there’s "blends" and there’s "singles". It’s kinda self-explanatory, so much so that I’m loathe to even say it, ...but blends are two or more single oils blended together. (I know...duh).

Yes, there’s specialty oils, and rare and uncommon oils— and sometimes those are needed and useful. But usually they’re more expensive and we’ve never had the money to dig deep into experimenting with them a whole lot.

However, over the years, we’ve found that simple, plain jane, single oils can often do the same things as the specialty oils if you’re resourceful enough to research and experiment. For instance, rose oil is a wonderful stress reducing oil, but it’s crazy-expensive. Sweet Orange oil will do the exact same thing and it’s crazy-Not-expensive.

The oils contained in our Foundational Oils Starter Pack include: sweet orange, peppermint, tea tree, lavender, and eucalyptus.

What kinds of things can you do with these oils? LOTS!

Here’s a few ideas...

Bug Spray Take a 2 oz spray bottle, fill it with distilled water, and put 5 drops of each oil into it. Voila! You have a safe, effective, non-toxic bug spray.
Tummy Troubles Mix 4 drops peppermint and 2 drops sweet orange into 2 oz water and you have an effective gas relief formula. Chug, and feel better.

(We don’t promote unreserved internal use of essential oils, but peppermint and orange are generally safe oils for consuming. However, best to test them slowly to make sure you won’t have a reaction).

Can't breathe? Headache? With a toothpick, stir 1 drop peppermint and 3 drops eucalyptus into a teaspoon of olive or coconut oil and massage into your temples and sinus area, being careful to avoid your eyes and nostrils. Great to put on the bottoms of your feet with some cozy socks too.

Allergies? With a toothpick, stir one drop each of lavender, peppermint, and tea tree into a teaspoon of coconut oil. Massage a small amount behind each ear, and over and around sinus area being careful to avoid eyes and nostrils. If you don’t like peppermint (like me) feel free to use eucalyptus.

Cleaner Take a 2 oz spray bottle, fill with half distilled water, half witch hazel and put 10 drops each of tea tree and sweet orange and you have an excellent and non-toxic, anti-bacterial kitchen/bathroom cleaner.

Sleep/Stress Equal measures sweet Orange and Lavender in a diffuser or tissue near your nose. Hard to breathe at night? Add equal amount of eucalyptus or peppermint.

These 5 oils are truly Foundational and useful in soooo many directions!

Healthy Healings: Insomnia Issues

insomnia
Sleep troubles.

So many folks struggle with getting a good night’s rest. And yet it’s so vital to good health.

When I first had my stroke, I really really had a hard time with insomnia. Being a stroke victim automatically means you’re extremely tired to begin with, and then to not be able to sleep was just sheer torture. I learned a lot though of what (herbally) worked through the experience.

You can read that article here:

Non-Chemical Options for Insomnia

Thankfully.... my problem sleeping has much improved in the last year for me. There’s a few things I still do though in addition to the few herbs I still take (I’m down to just valerian at night now) to ensure a better night's sleep. Maybe some of these can help you.

1. Getting exercise.... walking, and if not that then stationary biking, aerobics, stretching. In a word: Movement. It helps
to relax your muscles and to wear you out so that you’re actually tired.

2. Getting out in the daylight. Melatonin is the sleep hormone produced in our brain. It regulates our sleeping/waking cycles. It’s production is connected directly to daylight. So getting outside for half hour a day is key. Take off your glasses and sunglasses for that time too, so that your eyes are completely unfiltered.

3. Having a set basic bedtime and a set time to get up. You don’t have to be ultra-obsessive about this, but it does help the body greatly to keep track of its circadian rhythm (inner clock).

4. Sleep Blend. I generally put it on a fabric swatch, fold it up, and tuck it under my pillow. Then I can pull it out in the middle of the night when I wake up and it woos me back to sleep.

5. Limiting computer exposure at night. The blue light from computers, tablets and phones disturbs the workings of melatonin and messes with the body’s inner clock. You can combat this by wearing orange tinted glasses at night. Alternatively, my IPhone has what’s called "night shift" which turns things orange-y according to what time you set it to and counteracts the blue light. Not sure about Android, but you could check on apps for such a purpose.

These are all simple, easy steps to help the process of getting to sleep and staying asleep.

So so many things come right in our lives when our sleep patterns aren't out of whack.
